The role of the spiritual companion is to help facilitate this movement for the retreatant. This seminar will focus primarily on the Ignatian Exercises of the Second Week as conduits toward animating this intimacy.

Damian Zynda, Th. D., is on faculty in the Christian Spirituality Program at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and is the Director of Formation at the Church of the Transfiguration in the Diocese of Rochester, NY where she has developed an adult formation program based on the Spiritual Exercises. She is an experienced spiritual director and supervisor who has directed retreats in Canada and the US.

We will also look at healthy models of Christian service and leadership. In an interactive way, we will explore the balance in our own lives of service, increase our awareness about how we make decisions and how to find balance in our busy lives.

Cathie Macaulay is a spiritual director and co-facilitator of the Prayer Companion training program at the Ignatian Spirituality Centre. She currently works for the Archdiocese of Montreal, coordinating the Pastoral Home Care program for parishes.

The healing of Bartimaeus by Jesus (Mark 10: 46-52) provides the backdrop of this workshop. Upon contemplation of the sacred text, four stages of healing emerge: the state of disease and helplessness, the willingness to change and throw off the beggar’s robe, perseverance in the willingness to be healthy and, the decision to choose Jesus and follow Him. The aim of the workshop is to overcome individual crises and barriers which limit harmonious functioning in the family and in the workplace. Workshop activities aid in preparing the participants for explicit, deep, and emotional requests for healing their relationships. The activities are connected with prayer for healing.

Dr. Joseph Szopinski and Dr. Maria Owczarek are social psychologists, teachers, lecturers, counsellors and workshop facilitators.

The saints often called this the “desert.”  This feeling of God’s absence can be reflected in our workplace or through the crises in our Church and parishes or in family transitions.  What do the mystics, both modern and traditional, have to tell us? 
This workshop will tap into the traditional spiritual wisdom of the Desert Mothers and Fathers, including John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila as well as the experience of more contemporary writers.

We are hoping to form new groups for Fr. Krull's Contemplative Retreat.

A contemplative program in everyday life for those who have a longing for a simpler and more direct union with God, having formerly meditated on scripture with satisfaction, but feel an increasing frustration and inability to go on doing so.
The program involves following a detailed guidebook, giving an hour a day to contemplative meditation, and meeting with the director about once a week.
Fr. Carl Krull, S.J. has been directing this type of contemplative meditation for many years in India.

December is upon us and we are once again counting on your support to see us through another year. We are celebrating 35 years of service, with over 4,500 hours of direction supplied during the last year alone!

The Centre is bustling with activity! New programs, such as the Contemplative Retreat with Father Krull and Walking in the Desert with John Carey, have met with great success. Thanks to our website, we have requests for Fr. John Wickham’s books from as far away as Denmark! With new Ignatian Spirituality Centers popping up across Canada and the United States, we are experiencing a demand for materials related to teaching the Prayer Companion Program. In addition, we are closer to joining forces with Concordia University in the development of an accredited Spirituality Program.

Although Christmas is a season of great joy, for many it is a time of great loneliness. Thankfully, this loneliness is often recognized as a thirst for God and many turn to the Centre for spiritual guidance. And so we turn to you to help meet our financial needs so that we may continue to offer spiritual direction, free of charge. This is our gift to the community, but it does not mean that there is no cost in providing it. We count on our many friends and benefactors to make this gift possible. We rely on those who can to give generously, as in recent years, our revenues have been declining.

We thank you and ask the Lord's blessing for you and your loved ones through the intercession of our patron, St. Ignatius of Loyola.

This seminar will look at different types of eight day retreats, for example, preached, directed, interactive.  We will look at the dynamics of an eight day retreat within the context of Ignatian spirituality.   Practical concerns and difficulties will be addressed, along with their solutions, as well as the role of the director and personal style.
 
Ordained in 1977, Father Geoffrey (Monty) Williams has led numerous workshops and seminars. He is the author of several books including, Finding God in the Dark: Taking the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius to the Movies, for which he won the First Prize in the Catholic Press Association Awards in 2005.

with Beth Crisp (see biographical note below).
Sexual abuse profoundly affects survivors to the extent that many are unable to maintain previously held viewpoints or ways of being.  For Christian survivors, this may include how they perceive and relate to God and engage in intimate relationships including spiritual direction. The issues they bring to spiritual direction may be challenging for directors, particularly those with little knowledge or experience of sexual abuse. This workshop introduces some of the issues which may emerge in spiritual direction and explores the question of what makes an effective spiritual director for survivors of sexual abuse.

Finding God after Sexual Abuse: Prayer for Survivors of Sexual Abuse with Beth Crisp (see biographical note below).
Beth Crisp is the author of Beyond Crucifixion: Meditations on Surviving Sexual Abuse, a book of stories and prayers about the struggles with self, relationships and God which emerge when one attempts to move from sexual abuse. While a common response is to give up on faith, the only way of moving on and overcoming a crippling sense of desolation was not to run from God but to embrace that relationship. The resulting prayers, which range from profound to humorous, touch on the five essential food groups of the human soul — love, grace, humour, friendship and forgiveness.  In this session, Beth talks about this journey from despair to hope and the potential and pitfalls in exploring prayer in the aftermath of sexual abuse.

Biographical Note:
Beth R. Crisp is Associate Professor of Social Work at Deakin University in Australia and much of her work focuses on marginalisation and social exclusion. She is particularly interested in spirituality for people who find themselves on the margins of the church or wider society, particularly women who have experienced sexual abuse.  She is the author of Beyond Crucifixion: Meditations on Surviving Sexual Abuse (Darton Longman & Todd, 2010) and Spirituality and Social Work (Ashgate, 2010) as well as numerous articles in both theology and social work journals. Beth is a survivor of sexual abuse, Roman Catholic by choice and a regular contributor to The Way, a spirituality journal published by the British Jesuits.

In this conference, Dr. Ted Krasnicki would like to discuss how Gregorian chant is a meditation on the words of Holy Scripture. Specifically, he would like to show that chant is a musical exegesis of the text, in terms of theology, “word painting”, inner sentiment of the singer.

The program involves following a detailed guidebook, giving an hour a day to contemplative meditation, and meeting the director about once a week.

Fr. Krull, S.J., has been directing this type of contemplative meditation for many years in India.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday July 12th, 2010, at St. Ignatius Chapel, Manresa Retreat House, in Pickering, Ontario.

A MEMORIAL MASS will be celebrated on Thursday, October 7th at 7:30 pm, at St Ignatius Parish, 4455 West Broadway, NDG.

This workshop explores 7 common styles of being a “Messiah” and how we can be more aware of unhealthy patterns in our helping relationships. It also looks at healthy models of Christian service and leadership.

- explores “balance” in our own lives of service,
- increases awareness about how we make decisions,
- teaches how to find “balance” in our busy lives

Sr. Kathryn T. Pierce, IHM is a religious with the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and has extensive experience in intercultural training. Sr. Kathryn was co-founder and program director of Maryknoll’s Cross-Cultural Services Program for over 25 years. Her expertise includes designing and facilitating cultural sensitivity workshops for missionaries leaving or coming to the U.S.

She has frequently spoken to international congregations and dioceses to facilitate the acculturation process of their newly-arrived priests and religious.

Since the Maryknoll program closed in 2006, Pierce has returned to Detroit and established Intercultural Consultation Services, a non-profit charitable corporation that continues this work.

As a point of departure, we will consider conversion through the theology of Bernard Lonergan. Then we will examine Ignatius of Loyola’s lifetime of spiritual conversions and psychological development. Finally, we will examine the movements of conversion through the Spiritual Exercises.

This seminar will provide opportunity for participants to reflect on their own journey of conversion.


DAMIAN ZYNDA, Th. D. received her doctorate in Systematic Theology and Christian Spirituality from the Faculty of Theology at the University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto in 2004.

She is on faculty in the Christian Spirituality Program at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska and is the Director of Formation at the Church of the Transfiguration in the Diocese of Rochester, NY where she had developed an adult formation program based on the Spiritual Exercises. She is an experienced spiritual director and supervisor who has directed retreats in Canada and the US.

In order to help young people discover God’s love for them, it is necessary to know and reflect on these characteristics. This seminar is about how to accompany the younger generation on their spiritual journey.

Isabel Correa has worked with young people for more than a dozen years as a pastoral animator, catechist and retreat leader. She has dedicated her life’s mission to the formation and evangelization of young people.
